深大寺蕎麦ポタリング 「そば処 湧水」 from Randonneur from Northport Blog (2015/6/27 0:52)
Buried Treasure (Nippon Swift Company) from 昭和自転車 Vintage Japanese Bicycles (2015/6/26 12:58)
Swift is a well-known bicycle name dating back to 1869 when the Swift Bicycle Company was established in Coventry, England. Here is an advertisement for a Nippon (Japan) Swift bicycle from around 1924. The Nippon Swift Company (N.S.C) had a unique logo, a tripod mounted machine gun . The use of this logo probably stems from a patent awarded to the the chairman of the parent company back in England, Charles Thomas Brock Sangster, in 1916 for the design of a tripod used on Vickers machine guns . Here is an actual Nippon Swift Company fender ornament . Another model fender ornament. A genuine Nippon Swift Bicycle Company guarantee medal . Even ladies bicycles bore a tripod mounted machine gun fender ornament as can be seen in the advertisement below. Last year I received an email from HS-san whose grandfather's house is a literal time capsule. U ...

Vintage Japanese Bicycles (2015/5/29 12:45)
What is"Pedaloco"? Pedaloco is the name of a bicycle produced in the early 1950's by a Japanese manufacturer known as Hikari. The name is derived from the combination of"pedal" and the abbreviated form of train, ie"loco" thus rendering"Pedaloco". Take close look at the the pedals. Notice anything unusual? Yes, lever-action similar to what would be found on a train. I received a request from Y-san who is looking for information on this very rare bicycle. I remember years ago having posted this photo along with other Japanese vintage bicycles (Japanese only) from a 1953 export catalog shown below. Years ago a fellow enthusiast, now living in Germany and working at a museum as a"restorer" sent me the following information. The below magazine is entitled"Science Club" from the early 1950s. It provides a close-up of the lever-action pedals. ...

Vintage Japanese Bicycles (2015/5/3 8:18)
As mentioned in Bicycle Assembly? in Japan retailers were actually extended factory processes since bicycles were shipped as"kits", and,"final assembly" and"final inspection" were both performed at the retailer. The introduction of JIS ensured that individual parts met specific industrial standards. However, again, since bicycles were shipped as kits and assembled at the retailer there were no standards governing the final assembly and inspection process. In Bicycle Assembly? , it was noted that in the late 1950's the process of applying JIS to the retailers began. And, by 1960 retailers had to be qualified in assembly and inspection, and, enter into a contract with the manufacturer in order to sell completed bicycles bearing the coveted JIS mark . Below is a Bicycle Assembly Flowchart with times given for each step. Total ...

Vintage Japanese Bicycles (2015/4/11 15:18)
I'll be back with another English post soon until then stay trued and happy wheels.

In the previous post Bicycle Assembly?, it was noted that in Japan retailers were actually extended factory processes since bicycles were shipped as"kits", and,"final assembly" and"final inspection" were both performed at the retailer. To setforth standards and ensure quality, retailers had to be qualified in assembly and inspection in order to sell completed bicycles bearing the coveted JIS mark . At the time, the JIS mark was the only assurance a customer had, other than word of mouth, regarding the quality of a product. In preparation for introducing JIS, and, to better prepare retailers for assembly and inspection tests, manufacturers produced booklets to explain why JIS is essential, and why retailers need to be qualified in order to sell their product bearing the JIS mark. Here is an example of a booklet from Hikari . Below is a photo taken ...
