One of the prerequisites I have for a project is that I always try to find a bicycle whose original paint is salvageable. To date, all my restorations have the original paint, with minor touch up of course. The paint on old bicycles is quite good and typically three layered. It is enamel and laid on thick so compound cleans it up fairly well. As is the case with anything, aways try it in an inconspicuous place and check the results prior to proceeding. Compound comes in tubes or liquids, I prefer the liquid. A typical"compound kit" containing three grades can be obtained from a local automotive store for 10 dollars. These ...

RUCCのOBの尾賀くんがこのたび学生時代に一年間休学してオーストラリアを自転車で旅した時のことを一冊の本にまとめました。ツーリングレポートとして読むのもいいけど、私は読んでるうちに自分の二十歳のころをしばし思い出してしまいました。そっけないほど飾りのない文体は意外にもよく練られていてとても読みやすかったです。すべてが自粛気味の今、彼の轍をたどりながら自分自身の轍を振り返るのもいいかもよ。

This week we will look at how to disassemble a cottered bottom bracket. At first glance one may be tempted to start disassembling the bottom bracket by trying to remove the cotter pins; however, as we will see later, the cotter pins are removed last! Start by removing the locknut using a C-spanner. The adjustable bearing cup is threaded into the bottom bracket and thus can be removed by unscrewing it. If necessary a C-spanner can be used by leveraging the notches in the adjustable cup, just be careful not to damage the threads. Notice that nuts to the cotter pins have been removed, but the cotter pins themselves remain attached. Pull out the adjustable bearing cup, protective sleeve (if there is one) and axle. 計画停電の影響で今週の月曜日は小田急が経堂までしか動かず、会社を休みました。 火曜日から動き出しましたが、通常どおりのスケジュールでは動かず、電車は混んでいます。 今週は、何度か自転車通勤をしようかと心が動きましたが、着替えとか靴をどうするか花粉症対策は等考えるとよした方が良さそうなので、電車通勤をしていました。 靴は細いタイヤだとやっぱり最低でもMTB用のクリート付きにしたいので。 普段は家で朝食を取ってから出ていたのをやめにして１時間速く家を出たり、これまで各駅停車で行っていたのを途中で急行に乗り換えたりといろいろ試しました。 夕方に電力消費量が多く、急遽運転本数を通常の５０％にするとかで、ホームに人が溢れかえる事態になったりと、まあいろいろとあります。 ...

グランボア 革バーテープ

これね、一見普通の革バーテープに見えますがちょっと違うんです。
大抵の革のバーテープにはどうしても出てほしくないところに継ぎ目がでてしまっていたのですが、 これ はなんとその継ぎ目が無く一本づつワンピースでできています。幅も店長こだわりの22mm。何本も巻いた経験がこの幅に行きつきました。人気のアルミバーエンドとセットで今のアイズの一押し品です。

昨日は午後から雑誌の取材が入っていたのですが関東方面から来られてた編集者とカメラマンは仕事をしながらもつながらない電話で家族の安否を確認するのでとても大変でした。結局お２人ともご家族は無事で最終的にはほっとした表情で仕事を終えることができました。良かったです。我々も仕事をしていても仕事にならず携帯のワンセグで信じられない光景を目の当たりにしながら心落ち着かない一日を過ごしました。今回被災された地域にはアイズのお客様もたくさんおられます。どうぞ、ご無事で。。。そう願うばかりです。
今回の地震で海外からも励ましや心配するメールをいただいてます。ありがとうございます。アイズは無事ですよ。
